UK Prime Minister to reveal Manchester City meeting details amid charge concerns

Manchester’s links with Abu Dhabi have moved from the football calendar into a wider political argument, with concern among Premier League clubs over whether public intervention could affect any punishment facing Manchester City for 114 financial-rule breaches.

The issue has gathered momentum after comments by Andy Burnham, the former mayor of Manchester, about the scale of Abu Dhabi investment in the city since 2008. Several clubs fear that political pressure could influence the consequences for City after the club was found responsible for the financial irregularities.

Burnham acknowledged that the Abu Dhabi investment fund has played a major role in Manchester’s development since its arrival, remarks that heightened unease elsewhere in the league.

Call for disclosure of meetings

Opposition leader Kemi Badenoch has asked the British government to release full details of meetings between the prime minister and senior Manchester City figures.

Burnham said he was willing to make his own contacts public. Speaking on the Rest is Politics podcast, he said: “The opposition leader has asked me to publish details of my meetings, and I am very happy to do that.”

He added that he would set out clearly what he had done during his time as Manchester mayor, insisting that the meetings were not recent. Burnham said there had been only one significant meeting, held in 2021.

The debate now extends beyond City’s sporting and financial case, touching on the relationship between one of English football’s most powerful clubs, its Abu Dhabi ownership and the city transformed during that investment era.
