In the winter-market corridors of Paterna, Erik Lira’s hoped-for route from Cruz Azul to Spain has run into Valencia’s financial limits. The Mexican midfielder was discussed by the club, but a transfer is now considered beyond the budget available at Mestalla.
Paterna talks do not produce a deal
Valencia sporting director Braulio Vázquez met on Wednesday at the club’s training complex with Tarek Sebiat, the European representative of StayPro, the agency handling Lira’s career. The meeting briefly raised the prospect of a LaLiga move for the Cruz Azul player.
Yet the exploratory contact has not developed into a viable negotiation. Valencia cannot accommodate the cost of a permanent transfer under its current financial framework, with the requested terms and overall fee judged too high for the club’s circumstances.
- Erik Lira is a Cruz Azul midfielder and a Mexico international.
- Valencia held talks with his representation at the Ciudad Deportiva de Paterna.
- The Spanish club have ruled out completing the signing because of the financial demands of a transfer.
- The operation is regarded as unworkable within Valencia’s present budget.
A second European opening closes
This is not the first setback in Lira’s pursuit of a move across the Atlantic. Earlier in the season, Monaco had explored signing him, but the Principality club could not free a non-EU player place in their squad, bringing that proposed transfer to an end.
The approach of December had kept the European possibility alive, and the Valencia contact offered fresh encouragement to the player’s camp. Instead, the economic gap has ended the initial discussions before they could become a formal agreement.
Cruz Azul remain the immediate destination
Lira is therefore expected to remain focused on Cruz Azul’s Liga MX project for the time being. Any renewed move abroad will depend on another international club being prepared to meet the conditions required for his departure.
