Venezia’s return to the hard edge of Serie A has brought an early change on the bench. Six league defeats from six, with five goals scored and 16 conceded, have persuaded the club to dismiss Giovanni Stroppa after Sunday evening’s 3-1 loss away to Atalanta.
A season start that left no margin
- Venezia opened the Serie A campaign without taking a point, losing each of their first six fixtures.
- The side scored only five times across that run while conceding 16 goals.
- The latest setback came in Bergamo, where Atalanta won 3-1 on Sunday night.
- After that defeat, Venezia ended Stroppa’s tenure as head coach.
The former Milan midfielder is the fourth Serie A manager to lose his job this season. He follows Fabio Grosso at Fiorentina, Domenico Tedesco at Bologna and Carlos Cuesta at Parma.
Venezia consider familiar and experienced options
The club are still weighing their next appointment. Paolo Zanetti is currently ahead of Davide Nicola in the running.
Zanetti knows Venezia well, having managed the club between 2020 and 2022. During that spell, he led the Venetian side to promotion to Serie A, a memory that may carry weight as the board looks for someone able to reconnect the team with its recent progress.
Nicola remains the other candidate under consideration as Venezia seek a response before the season’s first difficulties become more deeply entrenched.
A demanding road to November
Whoever succeeds Stroppa will inherit a difficult immediate programme. Napoli, Inter and Como are three of Venezia’s next five opponents before the November international break.
For Venezia, the coaching decision is therefore only the first step. The next few Sundays will test whether a new voice can bring points quickly enough to alter the course of a campaign that has begun with six defeats and little room for further delay.
