Bayern Munich were held 3-3 by Champions League debutants Viking after a wild European night in Norway, recovering from two goals down before Harry Kane led the visitors ahead, only for Haugen’s 90th-minute equaliser to deny Vincent Kompany’s side victory.
What the night decided
Viking’s first Champions League encounter produced a result that will reverberate well beyond their own stadium. Bayern arrived as overwhelming favourites, yet left with a point after being exposed by the Norwegian side’s direct counter-attacking threat and then reduced to 10 men in the closing stages.
The home side, led by a coaching duo and playing on an artificial surface Bayern had not encountered since 2006, struck almost immediately. A corner won seconds after kick-off was delivered by captain Tripic, with Stensness beating goalkeeper Urbig in the second minute.
Urbig had been selected ahead of Manuel Neuer following Neuer’s mistake against Mainz. He was soon protected by sustained Bayern possession, as the German side moved the ball quickly and established control during the opening quarter-hour.
Laimer was first to test the Viking goal, Karl then aimed for the top corner, while Olise tried his luck from a free-kick. Luis Díaz was also denied by goalkeeper Ostbo. Viking spent long spells without the ball, but remained resilient and looked for openings through Tripic on the break.
Tripic nearly made it 2-0 himself after a promising move, but hesitated when the chance arrived. Bayern continued to create opportunities, with Kimmich and Kane both unable to convert clear openings.
Viking’s second goal instead came from another break. Christiansen, the club’s leading scorer, found space left by Bayern’s advanced shape and completed a swift counter-attack in the 38th minute.
Kompany responded before half-time with a triple substitution, sending on Upamecano, Davies and Saibari for Tah, Brown and Karl. The changes altered the momentum after the interval.
Kane began Bayern’s comeback from the penalty spot in the 54th minute. Six minutes later, he met Kimmich’s delivery to level the score, bringing the visitors back from 2-0 down.
The turnaround was completed in the 71st minute. Laimer played the ball to Luis Díaz after a flowing Bayern move, and the Colombian finished to put the German champions 3-2 in front.
Yet the match shifted again three minutes later when Olise was sent off for a second yellow card after throwing the ball into an opponent’s face. With Bayern down to 10, Viking pushed forward and pinned the visitors back.
The late pressure brought its reward on 90 minutes. Tripic supplied another decisive assist, and Haugen converted to secure a 3-3 draw, taking two points away from Bayern after a night in which the newcomers refused to yield to one of Europe’s giants.
