Villarreal and Napoli meet at Estadio de la Cerámica on Tuesday night with both sides already under pressure to put their first Champions League points on the board. Villarreal’s 3-2 defeat at Borussia Dortmund and Napoli’s 1-0 home loss to Arsenal have made Matchday 2 an early test of recovery in the 2026/27 league phase.
| Matchday | Fixture | Date | Kick-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Borussia Dortmund 3-2 Villarreal | October 2026 | — |
| 1 | Napoli 0-1 Arsenal | October 2026 | — |
| 2 | Villarreal v Napoli | Tuesday, 13 October 2026 | 21:00 CEST |
Napoli arrive with Kevin De Bruyne among the principal threats after the Belgian scored twice against Frosinone in his most recent outing. Villarreal, meanwhile, will seek to turn a competitive display in Dortmund into a first European result of the campaign in front of their own supporters.
A landmark night at La Cerámica
The game will be Villarreal’s 50th appearance in Europe’s leading club competition, adding a significant marker to a night that already carries real importance for the Castellón side. They stayed in contention until the final stages in Germany but left without reward, and now have the opportunity to use home advantage against Italian opposition.
Villarreal have not won a Champions League match since their quarter-final success in 2022. Ending that run would not only revive their league-phase position but also restore La Cerámica’s reputation as an awkward European destination.
Napoli seeking an away response
Napoli’s opening defeat to Arsenal means they travel to Spain facing much the same requirement as their hosts: a response before the league phase begins to take shape. The Italian side have quality across the pitch and will look to De Bruyne’s influence as they chase their first points.
There is little to separate the clubs in their previous continental meetings. Villarreal and Napoli have played each other six times in Europe, with two wins apiece and two draws.
