Zheng Qinwen survived a searching all-Chinese opener at the China Open in Beijing, defeating qualifier Shi Han 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-2 in two hours and 44 minutes to move into the second round of the WTA 1000 hard-court event.
A demanding Beijing start for Zheng
Playing in front of her home support, Zheng needed five set points before finally edging the opening tiebreak. Shi, ranked No. 231 and chasing her first main-draw victory at WTA 1000 level, refused to fade and claimed the second set 6-4.
Zheng, the No. 2 Chinese player on the WTA Tour behind Wang Xinyu, regained control in the decider. She broke Shi twice in the final set and closed out a 6-2 finish to keep her Beijing campaign alive.
- Final score: Zheng Qinwen beat Shi Han 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-2.
- Match duration: 2 hours and 44 minutes.
- Shi entered the match as a qualifier ranked No. 231.
- The victory came in Zheng’s opening match of the China Open main draw.
Numbers behind the victory
The win continued a familiar pattern for Zheng in deciding sets and added another significant result to her record at home and at WTA 1000 tournaments.
- 4: Zheng’s fourth victory of 2026 over an opponent ranked outside the Top 100. Her only defeat this season to a player beyond that bracket came at the French Open against Maja Chwalinska, who went on to finish runner-up.
- 6: Her sixth win in seven career matches against Chinese opponents. The lone defeat was against Yue Yuan at Indian Wells in 2024.
- 11: Zheng’s 11th three-set win of the 2026 season, including seven on hard courts.
- 18: Her total number of WTA main-draw wins in China. Only the United States, where she has 33, and Italy, where she has 23, have produced more.
- 49: Her 49th career match win at WTA 1000 level. Among Chinese players since the category began in 2009, she trails only Li Na, Peng Shuai and Zhang Shuai.
Kalinskaya awaits in the second round
Zheng is one of 12 Chinese players in this week’s Beijing main draw and will next face 15th seed Anna Kalinskaya. Their head-to-head stands at one win each, with both previous meetings going the distance.
- Zheng defeated Kalinskaya in the 2024 Australian Open quarterfinals.
- Kalinskaya won their 2022 Guadalajara round-of-32 contest.
With the opening hurdle cleared, Zheng now has a seeded opponent across the net as she looks to add to her 18 WTA-level main-draw victories on Chinese soil.
