Alexander Isak’s international break has been cut short after the Liverpool forward sustained a minor injury while scoring for Sweden in their Nations League win over Romania.
The 27-year-old has left the Sweden squad and returned to Liverpool, where he will be assessed by the club’s medical department. He will miss the remaining three matches of the current international window.
Goal in Stockholm followed by injury concern
Isak started and completed Friday’s 2-1 victory over Romania in Stockholm, opening the scoring for Sweden. It was his fifth goal of the season for club and country.
Like Kylian Mbappé, Isak found the net in his nation’s opening match of the 2027 Nations League campaign before being forced out of the subsequent fixtures through injury.
Liverpool confirmed on Sunday that the striker had departed the national-team camp because of what the club described as a slight injury. The Reds said he would now undergo further checks with their medical staff.
Sweden must continue without their striker
Sweden host Poland on Monday evening before travelling for matches against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday and Romania again on Monday, October 5.
Isak will take no part in those games as Sweden attempt to build on their opening win.
Manchester City fixture in sight
The former Newcastle striker will be hoping to recover in time for Liverpool’s home Premier League meeting with Manchester City on Sunday, October 11. The sixth-round match is scheduled to kick off at 17:30.
If cleared following Liverpool’s assessment, Isak could be available for Andoni Iraola’s side for that high-profile fixture.
