Auxerre Held by Le Mans Despite Archer Equaliser in Ligue 1

Auxerre pushed until the final seconds under the lights at the Stade de l’Abbé-Deschamps, but Le Mans held on for a 1-1 draw in Ligue 1’s eighth round on Sunday.

Cameron Archer’s 56th-minute header brought Auxerre level after a chaotic start to the second half, when Danny Namaso’s own goal had put the visitors ahead following a VAR review.

Quick facts

  • Result: Auxerre 1-1 Le Mans
  • Venue: Stade de l’Abbé-Deschamps
  • Le Mans lead: Danny Namaso own goal, 48 minutes, confirmed by VAR
  • Auxerre equaliser: Cameron Archer, 56 minutes
  • Late stoppage time: nine minutes were added
  • Bookings: Alexandre Lauray and Lucas Buadés for Le Mans; Kévin Danois for Auxerre

Le Mans carried the sharper threat before the interval. Louis Mafouta forced a low save with a header in the 10th minute, before Lucas Buadés fired wide from close range in the same attack.

Djibril Sidibé headed off target from a set piece, while a long-range free-kick from the former France defender also missed the target. Le Mans had earlier seen Habib Diallo and Buadés caught offside.

Auxerre’s best first-half opening came through Romain Faivre, whose left-footed effort from outside the box was stopped. Clément Akpa later sent a chance over after Axel Tuanzebe had helped on a free-kick delivery.

The match changed immediately after the restart. Buadés attacked Lucas Bretelle’s free-kick cross, and the sequence ended with Namaso turning the ball into his own net. The goal was checked and upheld, giving Le Mans a 1-0 advantage.

Auxerre responded quickly. Lamine Sy tested the goalkeeper from the right side of the area, and Archer then headed the hosts back level six minutes after the opener.

The equaliser gave Auxerre momentum. Archer had another effort blocked, Christ Makosso headed wide from a Faivre corner and Namaso missed from inside the area as the home side searched for a second.

Le Mans remained dangerous on transitions and from dead-ball situations. Mafouta had a header blocked, Buadés headed wide from another corner, and Jean Vercruysse sent a free-kick over.

The visitors were forced into two injury-related changes: Noa Boissé replaced Sidibé in the 53rd minute, while Rayan Bamba came on for Buadés late on. Dame Gueye and Vercruysse had already entered in the 63rd minute, with Daouda Traoré also introduced during the closing phase.

Auxerre turned to Pierre Ekwah, Aristide Zossou, Rayan Mandengue, Arthur Piedfort and Youssef Khoudda from the bench. Ekwah helped create several late attempts, including Faivre’s blocked shot and a saved effort from the left.

In nine minutes of added time, Le Mans had counter-attacking opportunities through Mafouta and Gueye, but neither found the target. Auxerre’s final chance came when Piedfort met Mandengue’s cross with a header from the middle of the box, only for the effort to be kept out.

Neither side could force a winner, leaving the points shared after a second half that finally brought the game to life.
