Brewers Lead Race for 2026 World Series Home-Field Advantage

The World Series ballpark question is already settled by the records on the board: whichever National League club survives will open the 122nd Fall Classic at home. Milwaukee, Los Angeles, Tampa Bay and Cleveland are the last four standing, and the Brewers own the strongest claim to the first two games — and potentially the final two — in their own park.

Milwaukee sets the home-field pecking order

Home-field advantage is based on regular-season winning percentage, not on whether a club reached October as a division winner or through a Wild Card spot. The club with the better percentage hosts Games 1 and 2, then Games 6 and 7 if the series reaches that far.

The four remaining teams line up this way:

Priority Club Record Winning percentage
1 Milwaukee Brewers 103-59 .636
2 Los Angeles Dodgers 100-62 .617
3 Tampa Bay Rays 98-64 .605
4 Cleveland Guardians 85-77 .525
  • Milwaukee, Los Angeles and Tampa Bay posted the three best regular-season marks in baseball.
  • Cleveland finished 11th in the majors by record.
  • Because both remaining NL teams finished ahead of the Rays and Guardians, the National League champion will hold World Series home field.
  • If the two league champions had finished with identical winning percentages, their regular-season head-to-head result would break the tie. Every club now plays every other club in at least one series, making that comparison available.

Fall Classic calendar begins October 23

Game times have not yet been set, but every game is scheduled for FOX and FOX One. The series follows the familiar 2-3-2 arrangement, with the American League champion on the road first.

  1. Game 1: Friday, October 23 — AL champion at NL champion.
  2. Game 2: Saturday, October 24 — AL champion at NL champion.
  3. Game 3: Monday, October 26 — NL champion at AL champion.
  4. Game 4: Tuesday, October 27 — NL champion at AL champion.
  5. Game 5: Wednesday, October 28, if needed — NL champion at AL champion.
  6. Game 6: Friday, October 30, if needed — AL champion at NL champion.
  7. Game 7: Saturday, October 31, if needed — AL champion at NL champion.

A familiar edge, but no October guarantee

Hosting the series has carried weight in the Wild Card Era, though it has hardly made the trophy automatic. Since 1995, clubs with World Series home field have won 20 of 30 championships, a 67 percent clip, with the neutral-site 2020 series excluded.

Take the winner-take-all game, however, and the home crowd has not consistently swung the result. Home teams are 19-22 in decisive World Series games all-time and 70-68 in all winner-take-all postseason contests through the 2026 Division Series.

  • In 2025, Toronto had the hosting edge, but the Dodgers beat the Blue Jays. The road team won five of seven games, including Los Angeles’ 11-inning Game 7 win at Rogers Centre.
  • The Dodgers also took two of three road games in the 2024 World Series, finishing off the Yankees in Game 5.
  • Texas captured its first championship in 2023 by winning three straight games in Arizona. Road clubs went 4-1 in that series.
  • Houston had home field against Philadelphia in 2022, yet dropped the opener at home before securing the title.
  • Atlanta lacked the hosting advantage in 2021 but won Game 1 and the clinching Game 6 against Houston on the road.
  • In 2019, Washington beat Houston in seven games without either home team winning even once.

How the rule reached its current form

The winning-percentage formula arrived in 2017. It returned for 2021 after the pandemic season produced the lone modern exception: the 2020 World Series between the Dodgers and Rays was staged entirely at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, as baseball sought to limit coronavirus exposure.

That matchup was the first World Series conducted at a single venue since 1944, when the Browns and Cardinals shared Sportsman’s Park in St. Louis. The neutral-site setup did not continue beyond that season.

Home-field rules have changed several times this century:

  • From 2003 through 2016, the league that won the All-Star Game received World Series home field, a response to the 7-7 tie in the 2002 Midsummer Classic.
  • For the 98 World Series editions before that arrangement, the advantage alternated between the American and National leagues according to whether the year was odd or even.
  • Since 2017, aside from the 2020 neutral-site series, regular-season winning percentage has determined the host club.

For Milwaukee and Los Angeles, then, the regular season has bought them something tangible: a chance to bring the Series back to their own clubhouse for the closing games. October history says that is useful. It also says the road club will have plenty of say before the final out.
