Calhanoglu Back in Inter Training Ahead of Parma Clash

Inter’s long break has brought Cristian Chivu the answer he most wanted from Appiano Gentile: Hakan Calhanoglu has returned to full training. After another adductor problem, the Turkish midfielder joined the group again and now has a full week to build towards Saturday’s Serie A return against Parma at San Siro.

A midfield reference point returns

Calhanoglu’s availability changes the balance of Chivu’s midfield. Inter retain quality without him, but his ability to direct possession and set the rhythm from the centre gives the side a more settled reference point.

The timing matters. Inter face seven matches across Serie A and the Champions League before the end of October, and the coach must decide how quickly to restore Calhanoglu to a demanding schedule. Parma are followed by Club Brugge, with the next training sessions set to determine whether he can start both games or should be selected from the outset in only one.

  1. Calhanoglu began the league campaign strongly, scoring against Monza at San Siro and then at Cagliari, with two very different finishes that underlined his confidence in front of goal.
  2. A further muscular issue interrupted that early momentum, again raising concerns over his physical continuity.
  3. In his absence, Piotr Zielinski has been the preferred solution in the key central area, starting Inter’s last two league recoveries against Udinese and Gasperini’s side at the Olimpico.
  4. Calhanoglu has now completed his first full session with the squad, putting him in contention for Parma and the European meeting with Brugge.

Managing the next seven matches

Chivu has options in a varied midfield group, but the workload is uneven after the international calls. Nicolò Barella, Petar Sucic and Stankovic junior were able to join their national teams, while Zielinski has been the most heavily used Inter midfielder in recent weeks.

That makes Calhanoglu’s condition more than a simple selection question. Inter can use his return to rotate the department, but the club will not want to force him through consecutive high-intensity starts before his fitness is fully secure. The player himself knows that regular availability, rather than a single return to the side, is central to his place in the team.

A contract issue waiting beyond the injury

The coming months may also shape Calhanoglu’s future in Milan. His present deal points towards this being his final season at Inter, and a possible extension is expected to become an important subject for the club.

His representatives have already been informed that any new agreement would likely involve a lower fixed salary than his current €6 million a year. There is greater room for discussion over performance-related bonuses, leaving negotiations open rather than settled.

For now, however, the immediate story is on the pitch. Calhanoglu has returned before a crowded stretch of league and European football, giving Chivu a familiar organiser at the moment Inter need to distribute their resources carefully. His challenge is to turn this latest recovery into the sustained run of matches that has too often been interrupted.
