Diana Shnaider turned a quarterfinal rematch into a convincing Ningbo statement on Friday, defeating fourth seed Iva Jovic 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 to reach the BNB Ningbo Open semifinals. The sixth seed needed 2 hours and 11 minutes to halt the American teenager after a high-level contest filled with passing shots, touch volleys and punishing baseline exchanges.

Shnaider recovered from an uncertain opening, saving four break points that would have put her 3-0 down and two more that could have sent her behind 3-1. Once settled, the 22-year-old began to vary the pace effectively, using a short slice to escape one dangerous moment and answering Jovic’s net attacks with a backhand pass and a lob in the closing game of the set.
-
Jovic levelled the match in the second set after taking advantage of Shnaider’s lone difficult service game at 3-3. Three unforced errors and a double fault gave Jovic the decisive break. The fourth seed was especially secure behind her first delivery, conceding only four points there and never facing a break point during the set.

Shnaider immediately regained control in the decider. A hesitant move forward from Jovic in the fourth game allowed Shnaider to produce another lob for the first break, before a backhand winner down the line widened the gap two games later. She closed the match on her third match point, delivering her fourth ace of the afternoon.
“It was a very high-quality match from both of us,” Shnaider said on court. “The second set was very close, but she played better. She was a little more aggressive and that is why she won it. I tried to regroup after the second set and fight for the third.”
The win reversed the result of their only previous meeting, when Jovic beat Shnaider 6-4, 1-6, 6-0 in the second round in Dubai in February.
Variety decides a demanding quarterfinal
Both players produced explosive all-court tennis, but Shnaider’s ability to alter the shape of rallies proved decisive. Her defensive work was as important as her attacking tennis, particularly during the second-set service game in which she faced break point. She extended a rapid exchange at the net with a series of reflex volleys before finishing with an overhead.
Jovic’s standout response came while serving for the second set. Under pressure from a lifted Shnaider, the American secured set point through a 23-shot rally that took both players from sideline to sideline. Jovic brought Shnaider forward with a drop shot and squeezed a crosscourt forehand winner past her.
But the final set belonged to Shnaider. After moving ahead 3-1, she used two short slices to draw Jovic inside the court, leaving the American stranded before Shnaider drove away a backhand winner.
Shnaider has now compiled a 10-3 record in Ningbo. Runner-up to Ons Jabeur in 2023 and a semifinalist last season, she will play a fourth semifinal of 2026, following runs in Adelaide, at Roland Garros and in Washington.
Finals Race and the semifinal draw
The eight direct qualifiers for the WTA Finals in Indian Wells have already been decided, although the two alternate places remain open after world No. 9 Iga Swiatek ended her season.
Marta Kostyuk stands 10th in the Race, with Jovic at No. 11 and Wuhan champion Maja Chwalinska in 12th. Shnaider occupies 13th place and remains in the chase for an alternate berth.
Ningbo also offers Shnaider the chance to end a title wait that stretches back to Monterrey in 2025, 14 months ago. Her 2026 season has brought the strongest major results of her career, including a first Grand Slam semifinal at Roland Garros, while she has collected three Top 10 wins this year after recording only one before this campaign.
Top seed Elena Rybakina awaits Shnaider in the semifinal.
