Florence moved on under the cup lights on Tuesday as Fiorentina swept past Serie B visitors Pisa 3-0, booking a Coppa Italia last-16 meeting with Napoli and extending Paolo Vanoli’s encouraging start since his return to the bench.
Franco Mastantuono began for the Viola after his remarkable three-goal display in Friday’s 4-2 Serie A win at Venezia, but the Argentine, on loan from Real Madrid, had a quieter evening. Booked early in the match, he was withdrawn around the hour mark as Fiorentina gradually imposed themselves on their Tuscan opponents.
Mateo Pellegrino broke Pisa’s resistance five minutes before the interval. Fiorentina then made the tie safe in the 71st minute through Wilfried Gnonto, before Portugal’s Pedro Gonçalves, known as Pote, added a third in stoppage time.
The result gives Vanoli two victories from two since he took charge following Fabio Grosso’s dismissal, with the club’s cup route now leading south to Napoli in the next round.
Elsewhere, Genoa edged Serie B side Südtirol 1-0. Mexico defender Johan Vásquez came on in the 80th minute and settled the contest with roughly three minutes remaining, sending Genoa through with a late decisive goal.
