Genesio Demands Marseille Response After PSG Defeat

Bruno Genesio did not leave Marseille’s 2-1 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain drained or resigned. He left irritated. In a season already slipping into danger, the OM coach has made clear that a respectable loss in the Classique cannot become a cause for satisfaction.

The move

Marseille travel to Troyes on Sunday needing a result after a painful start to the 2026-27 Ligue 1 campaign left them in the relegation places.

Genesio used his pre-match press conference to reject the suggestion that he had appeared worn down after the defeat to PSG before the international break. He said his expression had been driven by anger at the atmosphere surrounding the result, with too many people seemingly pleased that Marseille had lost by only one goal.

“I was angry because I felt there was a general sense of satisfaction at losing 2-1 to Paris,” Genesio said. “That annoys me in Marseille, just as it annoyed me in Lille, Rennes and Lyon. At the highest level, as a player or a coach, you are there to win matches.”

Many had expected Marseille to be overwhelmed by PSG given their situation, and Genesio accepted that avoiding a humiliation may have shaped the reaction. But he insisted that survival rather than victory is not the mentality he came to the club with.

“Perhaps everyone thought we would be humiliated or ridiculed, and in the end we avoided the worst,” he said. “But that is not my mindset and I did not come here to think like that.”

The Marseille coach said he was not depressed after the Classique, only frustrated. He was also disappointed for his players, who he felt had given a great deal and produced several positive elements, only to be punished again by small details that must be corrected faster.

Genesio also dismissed suggestions that he was exhausted or complaining. “I am not worn out,” he said, adding that he does not accept being described as someone who whines.

The French season around it

Marseille began the league season with a 4-0 win over Strasbourg, a performance that created optimism despite the club making no summer signings. Since then, however, OM have put together a damaging run of defeats.

Some of those losses were heavy and embarrassing; others came after performances in which Marseille showed encouraging signs. The PSG match fell into the latter category, but it still delivered no points and did nothing to move the side out of the bottom places.

For Genesio and his squad, the trip to Troyes is the start of another phase of the campaign. Marseille need to turn decent passages of play into victories quickly, because the coach’s message is blunt: effort and narrow defeats will not be enough in a relegation fight.
