The San Francisco 49ers have opened the season with two emphatic victories, and tight end George Kittle says the club’s familiar offensive core has made the early surge especially enjoyable.
San Francisco began its campaign with a 27-7 win over the Los Angeles Rams in the NFL’s first regular-season game in Australia, then returned to the Bay Area and handled the Miami Dolphins 35-13. The next challenge comes in Week 3 against the Arizona Cardinals.
Familiar offense, major addition
Kittle, a seven-time Pro Bowler who lost much of last season to a torn Achilles, believes continuity has been a major factor in the 49ers’ fast start. The offensive line, quarterback Brock Purdy, fullback, running back and tight end group have largely remained intact from last season.
The most notable changes have come at wide receiver. Deebo Samuel is back in the mix, while offseason addition Mike Evans has given Purdy another elite target on the outside.
Kittle praised the chance to share the field with veterans such as left tackle Trent Williams and Evans, describing both as players who continue to perform at a Hall of Fame level. He said the offense is particularly fun when Evans is involved in the play design, with Purdy delivering throws while Kittle helps clear space as a blocker.
Evans, Kittle said, has the kind of talent that would fit into any offensive system.
Purdy leads an efficient start
Purdy has not been sacked through the first two games and leads the NFL with an 80.4 percent completion rate. He has thrown five touchdown passes as San Francisco’s offense has piled up 62 points in victories over the Rams and Dolphins.
Kittle contributed four catches for 80 yards and a touchdown in the win over Miami, helping the 49ers turn their strong start into another lopsided result.
Cardinals await in Week 3
Despite the confidence surrounding the club, Kittle stressed that San Francisco is taking the season one game at a time. He expects Arizona to provide a difficult test in Week 3.
For now, though, the 49ers are healthy, productive and enjoying the momentum of a 2-0 start. Kittle said the team is playing well and feeling good, adding that winning makes football a lot of fun.
