Jeremy Swayman’s Shutout Leads Bruins Past Rangers in Opener

Jeremy Swayman opened Boston’s season with a 24-save shutout, and the Bruins broke a tight game wide open with three goals over the final 1:15 to beat the New York Rangers 3-0 at TD Garden on Tuesday.

For most of the night, Swayman and Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin turned the opener into a goaltending duel. Boston finally found its finish late, with Fraser Minten supplying the winner before JJ Peterka scored in his Bruins debut and Mark Kastelic sealed it into an empty net.

After the horn

Minten snapped the scoreless deadlock with 3:46 left in regulation. Working from the slot, he beat Shesterkin on the stick side to give Boston the lead.

Peterka pushed the margin to 2-0 at 17:06, putting a cap on a successful first game in black and gold. The Bruins acquired Peterka from the Utah Mammoth on June 26, sending Utah the No. 23 selection in the 2026 NHL Draft plus a conditional first-round pick in 2028.

Kastelic added the empty-netter 23 seconds after Peterka’s goal, completing Boston’s late three-goal burst.

Swayman earned the 19th shutout of his NHL career. He stopped 15 shots through the first two periods, when neither side could solve its opposing goaltender.

Shesterkin kept New York level for much of the game with 20 saves, including a sharp glove stop on Casey Mittelstadt during a Boston 2-on-1 less than two minutes after Swayman made a key sequence of his own.

At 9:08 of the third, Swayman denied Pavel Dorofeyev and then J.T. Miller on consecutive Rangers chances. Those stops held the game at 0-0 and gave the Bruins time to find their late offense.
