“I’m disappointed that I have to pull out of Singapore,” Pegula said. “The last few weeks, particularly the US Open, were physically demanding, and I do not feel ready to return and compete at the standard I set for myself.”
The 32-year-old added that she had wanted to play the event and hopes to return to Singapore in a future season.
Demanding North American hard-court run
Pegula arrives at the Asian portion of the calendar after a productive American hard-court swing. She reached consecutive finals in Washington, D.C., and Cincinnati, with a fourth-round run in Toronto between those events, before making the US Open semifinals for a second successive year.
Her 15-4 record across that stretch has taken her to 50 match victories for the season, the highest total on the WTA Tour. She also stands third in the Race to the WTA Finals with 5,825 points.
Her next scheduled tournament remains the China Open in Beijing, a WTA 1000 event running from September 30 through October 11.
Andreeva moves into top-seed position
With Pegula out, world No. 5 Andreeva will become the highest-ranked player in the Singapore draw. The WTA 500 tournament will feature a 28-player field that also includes Amanda Anisimova, Alexandra Eala, Maja Chwalinska, Elise Mertens, Barbora Krejcikova and Maria Sakkari.
Singapore and the Korea Open open the Asian Swing on September 21, with both tournaments scheduled to conclude on September 27. The tour then moves to Beijing for the first of two consecutive WTA 1000 events.
