Roma opportunity disappeared with sporting director exit
Vásquez was the most advanced candidate for a move to Roma among several clubs that had tracked his progress in Italy. The proposed transfer lost momentum when sporting director Frederic Massara left his role, removing the figure overseeing the operation.

A leader for Mexico after the North American World Cup
Vásquez emerged as one of Mexico’s most impressive defensive performers during the 2026 World Cup. Under Javier Aguirre, he became a leading presence in the back line and took on increasing responsibility within the squad.
Edson Álvarez remains one of the strongest voices in the Mexico dressing room, yet the Genoa defender has also developed into an important figure for both teammates and supporters. His contribution was central as Mexico built one of the tournament’s stronger defences, even though the side recorded relatively few clean sheets.
Fifth Genoa season brings goals and captaincy
The current campaign is Vásquez’s fifth with Genoa, the club he joined from Pumas in 2021. A 2022-23 loan spell at Cremonese briefly took him elsewhere in Italy, but his return to Genoa established him as a key player and eventually saw him wear the captain’s armband.
