Jorge Jesus Starts Portugal Reign with Nations League Win Over Wales

Jorge Jesus began his Portugal reign with a win, but the final whistle brought as much relief as celebration after Wales pushed hard for an equaliser in the closing stages of a 1-0 Nations League defeat.

The move

Portugal made the brighter start in Jesus’s first match in charge and took control through João Félix in the 22nd minute. Nuno Mendes created the opening, breaking forward with purpose before setting up Félix for a fine finish.

The 2016 European champions had enough opportunities to put the game beyond Wales, yet their lack of precision kept the contest alive. Cristiano Ronaldo, starting as captain at 41, was particularly frustrated after failing to convert several chances.

The Al-Nassr forward thought he had scored in the 59th minute when he sent a low, angled effort into the net. His celebration was short-lived, however, as the goal was correctly ruled out for offside.

Ronaldo left the pitch in the 68th minute and Portugal’s rhythm faded with him. Wales grew in belief and missed a huge chance in the 75th minute, a moment that could have changed the night completely.

No further goals followed, leaving Jesus with a winning start but clear evidence of the work still ahead. Portugal travel to Norway in three days for their next Nations League assignment.
