Juventus Without Spalletti for Crucial Lazio Clash After One-Match Ban

Juventus will face a defining Sunday without Luciano Spalletti on the touchline. The coach has received a one-match suspension and will miss the meeting with Lazio on 18 October, a contest that brings the league leaders to Turin: Maurizio Sarri’s former side are level with Inter at the summit.

A ban after the Cagliari frustration

The disciplinary decision followed Juventus’ 1-1 draw at Cagliari, where Spalletti’s irritation spilled over in an exchange involving Fabio Pisacane, who has also been suspended. The result in Sardinia did little to calm the broader debate around the Bianconeri, with every stumble again reviving discussion of Antonio Conte and the direction of the technical project.

Spalletti made clear that he sees the issue in terms larger than a single afternoon or a single scoreline. “I am not gambling on the outcome of one match,” he said. “I am nearly 70 and I am putting the end of my career on the line. I have to manage my team’s potential in the best possible way. The final result is not what concerns me.”

The message was directed as much at his squad as at the noise around the club: Juventus’ coach believes his players must carry responsibility for the level they can reach.

Juventus’ position after six rounds

There is no immediate crisis in the table, but there is pressure created by the gap to the front. Six Serie A matches have been played and Juventus sit sixth, five points behind the Inter-Lazio pair.

  • Juventus have 11 points from six league fixtures.
  • Their record is three wins, two draws and one defeat.
  • They have scored nine goals and conceded five.
  • The draw at Cagliari prevented them from reducing the distance to the leading teams.

The concern around Spalletti is therefore tied to a much longer Juventus story. The club have not won the Scudetto since 2020, when Maurizio Sarri delivered the title before being dismissed. Since then, the club have moved through six coaches in six years, while 13 different executives have held roles in the decision-making structure at Continassa.

That turnover offers a wider context for the present unease. Spalletti may be the man exposed after a disappointing draw, but the questions extend beyond the current coach.

A squad still looking for its solutions

Juventus’ attacking limitations have become central to the discussion. Woltemade has scored only once, against NEC Nijmegen, while Kolo Muani has two goals: one against NEC and another in Cagliari. Ekhator has barely featured and, in any case, is viewed as a support forward rather than a striker expected to reach double figures.

  • The side still lack a recognised playmaker capable of controlling the game from midfield.
  • There are also doubts over whether the current group possess enough players able to move the ball forward quickly and decisively.
  • Spalletti is working with a forward line that has not yet produced regularly in Serie A.

In that light, the coach’s task is less about finding an instant answer to one result and more about giving shape to a side with evident gaps. The Lazio match will demand that Juventus respond without their manager on the bench, but it will not settle the deeper issues that have followed the club through several seasons.

Europe offers a different test before Lazio

Before the league confrontation, Juventus travel to Vigo on Thursday for their Europa League match against Celta. The Bianconeri arrive after a 5-0 victory over NEC Nijmegen, who are 11th in the Eredivisie and 11 points behind leaders Feyenoord.

Celta, ninth in La Liga and 16 points adrift of Barcelona, represent a manageable but meaningful assignment. Juventus need the trip to Spain to reinforce confidence before Lazio arrive, especially with Spalletti forced to watch the following league fixture from away from the technical area.

The coming days will not decide a season on their own. They may, however, show whether Juventus can begin to turn an unsettled chapter into a more coherent one.
