Mathew Barzal Surprises Cancer-Free Islanders Fan Tommy Ryan on Fox & Friends

Tommy Ryan’s road back to the rink has reached a milestone worth more than any scoreboard result. The New York Islanders supporter marked one year cancer-free this week, and Mathew Barzal joined the celebration with an on-air surprise during a Tuesday appearance on “Fox & Friends.”

Ryan was discussing his recovery when host Lawrence Jones asked what he would say to Barzal if he had the chance. Ryan, unaware that the Islanders forward was listening, answered simply: “Just thank you. Thank you for everything.”

Jones then directed Ryan toward the camera, where Barzal appeared. “Tommy, it’s good to see you, man,” Barzal said. “You look awesome, buddy.”

Ryan thanked Barzal and the Islanders for stepping in during the most difficult stretch of his illness. “I appreciate everything you did while I was sick,” he told Barzal. “It was a really hard time in my life, and for you and the organization to go out of your way for me, I’m really grateful.”

The connection began in 2025, after Ryan was diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The rare form of cancer led to a hospital stay, chemotherapy and a severe infection that resulted in the loss of his left lung. Ryan was later placed in a medically induced coma for five days.

His father, Dan, contacted the Islanders and shared what his son was facing. Barzal answered that outreach with a FaceTime call to Ryan in the hospital, promising him a visit to UBS Arena once he was well enough to make it.

That invitation became reality in March 2026. Ryan watched the Islanders from rinkside, then met Barzal and other players after the game. For a fan fighting his way through treatment and recovery, the chance to circle an Islanders date on the calendar carried real weight.

“Having an Islanders game to look ahead to, getting to speak with the players and experience all of that, it was amazing,” Ryan said after the visit. “It gave me hope.”

One year cancer-free, Ryan is now able to look back on that promise from Barzal not as a distant goal, but as one of the stops on his way back.
