Fulham found the one moment of quality a tight afternoon required, with Oscar Bobb’s fine 80th-minute strike earning Álvaro Arbeloa’s side a 1-0 win at Coventry City and lifting the visitors out of the Premier League relegation places.
The London club had plenty of the ball at the Coventry Building Society Arena but had struggled to make it count against a committed home defence. Bobb changed that with a curling finish after a short corner, delivering Fulham’s second successive victory and only their second league win of the campaign.
For Coventry, the result leaves a familiar and uncomfortable look to the table. Frank Lampard’s side remain second from bottom on six points and could slip to last place once Sunderland have played. Fulham move onto eight points, clear of the drop zone for now.
Bobb supplies the cutting edge
Coventry began with the greater urgency, pressing high and sending early balls forward in an attempt to unsettle Fulham. The hosts were direct in their approach, while Fulham needed a few minutes to settle into the passing game that has become the basis of Arbeloa’s side.
Once they did, the visitors controlled possession for long spells. Fulham are second only to Manchester City for Premier League passing volume, and the pattern was clear here: patient circulation, plenty of territory, but too little penetration.
Bobb offered the clearest flashes of invention. In the 18th minute, he picked out Josh King unmarked in the area, only for King’s effort to strike the crossbar. It was the best opening of an otherwise restrained first half.
Coventry had occasional promising moments through Rugoni, but found it difficult to build from the back under Fulham’s control. Their defensive work, however, kept the score level at the interval.
Coventry pressure fades after the break
The home side came out more aggressively after half-time, closing Fulham down higher up the pitch and making their visitors work for every passing lane. Alex Iwobi had little influence, while Fulham continued to find a well-organised Coventry block difficult to unlock.
Substitutions brought fresh legs but no dramatic shift in the contest. Fulham retained more of the ball and came close from a corner in the 66th minute, when a header provided one of their more threatening second-half attempts.
Then Bobb provided the finish the game had lacked. Fulham worked a corner short and the ball ran to the attacker outside the box. Facing Rudoni, Bobb feinted twice, moved onto his left foot and bent a precise effort inside the far post.
It was a goal worthy of deciding the match. Fulham responded sensibly, using possession to keep Coventry away from their own area and seeing out the closing stages without allowing the home side a route back into the contest.
There was no abundance of chances and little room for decorative football, but Fulham will not complain. In the lower reaches of the table, one clean strike and three points can make a very respectable afternoon.
