Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Kang-In Lee was involved in the tackle that preceded Valverde’s injury during Sunday’s derby, with Real Madrid confirming on Tuesday that the Uruguay international has suffered a grade-three sprain to his left ankle.
Valverde initially got back up and completed the entire match. Madrid had described the problem as a serious injury immediately after the fixture, before providing the more detailed medical update two days later.
The Spanish club did not set a timetable for his return and said his recovery would be monitored closely. Valverde is expected to miss Diego Forlan’s first Uruguay squad announcement.
There is hope in Madrid that the midfielder’s absence can be kept below three weeks. However, grade-three ankle sprains commonly involve rehabilitation periods of more than six weeks, leaving considerable uncertainty over when he will be available again.
The next appointment in France
PSG will now await the next stage of their domestic schedule, while Lee’s challenge in the derby remains part of a difficult aftermath for Madrid. No further disciplinary outcome or fixture date was specified.
