Samu Aghehowa Tears Up After Emotional Return in Porto’s Win Over Benfica

At the Estádio do Dragão, where Porto’s meetings with Benfica carry the weight of an entire country’s footballing rivalry, Samu Aghehowa’s brief appearance became one of the afternoon’s most moving scenes. The 22-year-old Spanish international returned after 223 days away, coming on in the 85th minute of Porto’s 3-1 victory over Benfica before tears took over at the final whistle.

It was his first match since February, when he suffered a complete rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a game against Sporting. Surgery followed, then seven months of rehabilitation, daily work and the disappointment of missing the World Cup.

His return had not been expected to come in such a charged fixture. “I was not supposed to play in this match, but everything went well,” Aghehowa said afterwards. “It was how I dreamed it. It has been a very long road. Nobody saw the sacrifices I made, training every day without holidays.”

Porto’s medical staff received special thanks from the forward, who said from the beginning that his objective had been to return “in the best condition and as quickly as possible.” The plan brought him back earlier than anticipated, and the Dragão responded with a loud ovation as he entered the Portuguese classic.

For Aghehowa, the minutes themselves mattered less than what they represented: the end of a long period spent away from the rhythm of matches and the start of a new chapter in his Porto career. “Coming back in this game was very special,” he said. “I am very happy.”

When Porto’s win was confirmed, the emotions of the previous months finally surfaced. Surrounded by the noise of a 3-1 triumph over Benfica, Aghehowa broke down in tears, releasing the strain of an injury recovery that had tested one of Europe’s young attacking talents at the sharpest point of his early career.
