Sarri Urges Support for De Ketelaere Ahead of Ajax Clash

Atalanta travel to Amsterdam seeking to turn European continuity into a route out of an uneasy domestic spell. Last week’s opening win over Pafos gave the Bergamo side a useful start in the Conference League, but four defeats from their last five league matches have left the wider season in need of a response.

The meeting with Ajax arrives in a setting Maurizio Sarri described as worthy of the occasion. For Atalanta, it is not yet a decisive night, but it can offer evidence that the team still has the technical quality and composure to steady its campaign.

Quick facts

  • Atalanta opened their Conference League campaign by beating Pafos.
  • Their league form has brought four losses in the past five matches.
  • Ajax await in Amsterdam in the next European fixture.
  • Sarri believes 13 or 14 points should be enough to avoid the Conference League play-off round.
  • Charles De Ketelaere is expected to carry greater influence after a subdued start to the season.

“It will be a high-level match in a wonderful environment,” Sarri said before the trip. “We hope that, by the final whistle, we are the more technical side between us and Ajax.”

The coach has seen encouraging passages in Atalanta’s performances, but not enough control over the full match. He said his side regularly play well for 30 or 40 minutes, only to follow those spells with periods in which their shortcomings become too visible.

Sarri resisted any suggestion that Ajax against Atalanta should be framed as an early final. He said such language would not be credible to present to his players, even if reaching the final remains an ambition.

For now, the more immediate target is the league phase. Sarri urged caution, noting that Atalanta need to build towards the 13 or 14 points likely required to bypass the play-offs rather than look too far ahead in the competition.

De Ketelaere’s form will also sit at the centre of the evening. The Belgian has not yet found his usual sharpness this season, though Sarri made clear that the answer is support rather than impatience.

“Sooner or later he will have a rest,” Sarri said. “But if we want him to make the difference, we have to stand by him in moments like this. When he is playing well, everyone will be there to embrace him.”

Amsterdam therefore presents more than a European appointment. It is a chance for Atalanta to show that their brighter moments can become a complete performance, and that a difficult run in Serie A does not have to define the next chapter of their season.
