Yankees Place Clarke Schmidt Back on IL With Right Biceps Neuritis

Clarke Schmidt’s latest comeback has hit another pause, with the Yankees sending the right-hander back to the 15-day injured list because of neuritis in his right biceps. The move is retroactive to Monday, and it comes just days after Schmidt made his first big league appearance following Tommy John surgery.

A brief return turns into another setback

  1. Schmidt returned to the Yankees on Sept. 16 after recovering from reconstructive elbow surgery.
  2. His lone outing after activation came in relief, when he recorded two strikeouts and gave up two hits in two-thirds of an inning.
  3. He was scheduled to take the ball in the sixth inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday, but stopped his pregame throwing early after feeling what he called cramping near the right biceps.
  4. The Yankees placed Schmidt on the 15-day IL on Thursday, backdating the designation to Monday.
  5. Right-hander Bradley Hanner was called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to fill the opening on the roster.

Another wait for Schmidt

The 30-year-old had already lost a major portion of the 2025 season after an elbow issue ended his year in early July. Before that shutdown, Schmidt had gone 4-4 with a 3.32 ERA across 14 starts, giving the Yankees a steady turn in the rotation before surgery entered the picture.

His major league resume includes a 23-24 record and a 3.81 ERA. For now, though, the club will have to wait once more to see whether he can build on his September return. The immediate concern has shifted from the repaired elbow to the biceps discomfort that surfaced before Sunday’s game in Arizona.
