Zheng Qinwen claimed a landmark China Open crown on Sunday, becoming the first Chinese woman to lift the WTA 1000 trophy at the event after a 7-5, 6-4 final victory over fourth seed Mirra Andreeva.
The home wildcard secured the first WTA 1000 title of her career and the sixth tour-level trophy overall. It was also Zheng’s first championship since her Tokyo triumph late in 2024.
The match
Andreeva pushed Zheng through a tense opening set and held three set points, but the Chinese player escaped each one. Zheng then produced a decisive surge, winning the final 11 points of the set to turn the contest around and take it 7-5.
The second set remained close until Zheng earned a late break of serve. She protected the advantage to complete the straight-sets win after 1 hour and 43 minutes.
The final added another significant result to Zheng’s record against the elite: it was her 14th career victory over a top-10 opponent and her third of the season. Andreeva is projected to move up to world No. 3 when the updated rankings are released on Monday.
