ABS Challenges Overturn 54% of Calls, With Catchers Leading Reviews

The first season of the Automated Ball-Strike System put a number on the value of a well-timed challenge: 54% of challenged calls were overturned.

The early returns also showed a clear split behind the plate. Catchers fared much better than hitters when they asked the system to review a ball-or-strike decision.

Quick facts

  • Automated Ball-Strike System challenges reversed 54% of reviewed calls in its first season.
  • Catchers had greater success on challenges than batters.
  • The results underline how much a catcher’s view of the zone can matter in a challenge situation.

That gap is the human note in the numbers. A catcher sees the pitch from the receiving end, tracks its finish into the glove and has a close read on where the ball crossed the plate. A hitter is making a swing decision in a fraction of a second, then trying to judge a call after the fact.

With more than half of challenged decisions changing, the challenge system did not merely serve as a rare correction tool. It regularly shifted calls that otherwise would have stood, with catchers proving particularly effective at identifying misses.
