In Prague, a young Mexico-American forward has delivered his first decisive moment in Czech football. Diego Velásquez, born in Chicago in 2006, scored his maiden Dukla Praha goal to secure a 1-1 home draw with SK Kladno in the 12th round of the Chance Národní Liga.
A first goal at Dukla’s home ground
Velásquez was selected from the start and repaid the coach’s faith with the equaliser after Kladno had taken control of the scoreline.
- SK Kladno went ahead in the 23rd minute through Ondřej Novotný.
- Dukla continued to press for a way back into the match after the interval.
- In the 54th minute, Štěpán Šebrle sent a cross into the area for Velásquez.
- The forward created space before finishing past the goalkeeper for 1-1.
- Neither side found another goal, leaving Velásquez’s strike as the final score.
The home side searched for a winner in the closing stages, but the draw remained intact. For Velásquez, the goal was his first for the Prague club and ensured Dukla did not leave the fixture empty-handed in front of their own supporters.
Dukla remain in the promotion chase
The point against Kladno keeps Dukla Praha among the leading sides in the Czech second tier. After 12 matches, the club sits third with 21 points, built from six wins, three draws and three defeats.
| Team | Position | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Karviná | 1st | 27 |
| Jihlava | 2nd | 23 |
| Dukla Praha | 3rd | 21 |
Dukla have scored 22 goals and conceded 19 across the opening dozen rounds. Their current place keeps them in the competition’s promotion play-off positions, although the draw denied them the chance to add a seventh victory.
A Chicago-born player finding his mark in Prague
Velásquez’s contribution offers a positive note for Dukla as the campaign develops. The 2006-born attacker is beginning to make an impact on the scoresheet in Europe, with his intervention against Kladno turning a potential home defeat into a useful point in the race near the top of the table.
