Joey Barton, once one of the Premier League’s most combustible midfield figures, faces the prospect of losing prison privileges after tobacco and a mobile phone were found in his cell at HMP Liverpool.
The former Manchester City, Newcastle United and Queens Park Rangers player is being held on remand over an alleged assault at a Merseyside golf club. Prison staff are examining whether the prohibited items belonged to Barton or whether he may have been pressured by other inmates into holding them.
Items found during prison search
- Officers from an anti-corruption unit searched Barton’s cell at Liverpool prison after acting on intelligence.
- The search uncovered several banned items, including tobacco and a mobile phone.
- Barton denies wrongdoing, while the prison investigation is considering whether the items were being stored for other prisoners.
Prison sources said Barton’s public profile could make him vulnerable inside, with potentially dangerous inmates able to target a well-known former footballer. He is not said to have identified any other prisoner in connection with the contraband.
If he is found to have breached prison rules, the consequences could range from the loss of television, gym access and time outside his cell to an additional custodial sentence.
Remanded over golf club allegation
Barton, who later managed Fleetwood Town and Bristol Rovers, is on remand after being charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm on a man in an alleged attack at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club in Merseyside.

- Barton could face a further six months in prison in relation to the allegation.
- A trial date has been set for 8 March 2027, exactly a year after the reported incident.
Previous conviction
In 2025, Barton was convicted over an assault on his wife, Georgia Barton, at their London home in June 2021. He received a sentence equivalent to 12 weeks in prison, although he was not required to serve it in custody.
The court heard that Barton had been drinking with other couples while the children slept before kicking Georgia Barton in the head, leaving her with a swelling and a bleeding nose.
