Stanislas Lobotka remains one of Napoli’s constants as the side adjusts to a new coach, altered midfield partnerships and another tactical identity. Whether the team is arranged with three midfielders or with a double pivot, the Slovakian has retained a central role, providing continuity in a department currently without Frank Anguissa and Scott McTominay.
Napoli’s reference point in midfield
Lobotka has again featured prominently across Napoli’s key statistical categories: distance covered, recoveries, passing accuracy and forward touches. He is fourth in the squad for minutes played and has started every match this season, underlining the trust placed in him by Massimiliano Allegri.
His importance is sharper with Anguissa and McTominay both working towards their returns. Lobotka is the remaining regular from Napoli’s title-winning midfield, a player whose contribution has run through the teams coached previously by Luciano Spalletti and Antonio Conte and now into Allegri’s project.
At present, Billy Gilmour has become his closest partner. Napoli have used two deep midfielders as one of their available solutions, with Kevin De Bruyne operating higher up as an additional creative reference rather than as a conventional holding player. The group is still changing shape, but Lobotka has adapted without losing his influence.
Comfort in more than one system
For Lobotka, the distinction between directing play in a 4-3-3 and occupying the centre of a 4-2-3-1 has not fundamentally changed his game. He remains the player who connects Napoli’s phases, resists pressure and gives the side a route out of crowded areas.
His fourth Napoli goal arrived against Bologna, when he made a late run into the penalty area to meet Favasuli’s delivery from the right. It was an unusual finish for a midfielder more inclined to organise than to chase goals, but it offered another illustration of his ability to read the moment.
His stronger habits lie elsewhere: pressing, winning possession, positioning himself for the next pass and moving the ball quickly over short distances. Once he carries possession, his feints and changes of body position can create space where there appears to be none. They are useful both against intense pressing and when Napoli need a clearer passing lane.
Allegri has handed him responsibility from the beginning, and there is little to suggest that place will be surrendered. With Gilmour alongside him and De Bruyne ahead, Napoli have found a working relationship while waiting for further midfield options to return.
A long-standing inspiration
Luka Modric has long been a footballing reference for Lobotka, and the comparison has resurfaced under Allegri. It is not based on identical qualities, but on their shared understanding of the playmaker’s task: staying involved in the flow of the match, setting its rhythm and remaining visible in the centre of the team’s work.
The connection also has a personal history. Lobotka and Modric were opponents in Spain during the Real Madrid-Celta Vigo meetings, while Modric’s influence on the Slovak midfielder’s approach has never been hidden. Modric was also Milan’s guiding figure in possession last season, another reason the parallel has been drawn in Italy.
International duty before the next Napoli chapter

Napoli may still be searching for the final version of Allegri’s midfield, particularly while Anguissa and McTominay are unavailable. Yet Lobotka has already supplied the essential thread: a reliable organiser capable of belonging to different Napoli teams without changing the principles that have made him indispensable.
