NFL Week 2: Lions-Bills Clash Highlights a High-Scoring Start

The NFL moves into Week 2 after an opening weekend that matched the highest Week 1 scoring total of the Super Bowl era. The first slate also delivered upsets, overtime drama and the league’s first regular-season game in Australia, setting up a Thursday night meeting between two unbeaten contenders in Detroit and Buffalo.

Week 1 sets a high-scoring tone

The 2026 season began with scoring at a record-matching pace, while several early results reshaped expectations around the league.

  • The Arizona Cardinals opened with an upset of the Los Angeles Chargers.
  • The New York Giants earned a major prime-time victory against the Dallas Cowboys.
  • San Francisco made an early statement by beating the Los Angeles Rams in the NFL’s first regular-season game played in Australia.
  • Detroit held off New Orleans in overtime after surrendering a 21-point lead.
  • Buffalo began 1-0 by winning a road thriller over Houston.

Lions and Bills open Week 2 in prime time

Detroit and Buffalo meet Thursday night with both clubs carrying 1-0 records into the game. The Lions survived their comeback scare against the Saints, while the Bills escaped Houston with a close win. The matchup will also mark the first regular-season game at Buffalo’s new Highmark Stadium.
