The Phillies added another experienced arm to the pitching mix Tuesday, claiming right-hander José Urquidy on waivers from the White Sox. Caleb Kilian was moved to the 60-day injured list with his left oblique strain to clear the 40-man roster spot.

Those three outings produced a 2.70 ERA, and they offer the Phillies a fresh look at a pitcher who has been used in more than one lane lately. Urquidy made one start this year, facing the Rangers on Aug. 24, but his following three appearances all came out of the bullpen.
The 31-year-old has worked in 11 games this season while moving through the Pirates and White Sox staffs. His career reaches back seven Major League seasons, beginning with Houston from 2019 through 2023 before stops with Detroit in 2025 and Pittsburgh and Chicago this season.

Urquidy has allowed 198 earned runs across those 436.1 big-league innings. The Phillies also know him from a memorable October setting: the Mazatlán, Mexico, native threw three scoreless innings in Game 3 of the 2022 World Series at Citizens Bank Park, a 7-0 Philadelphia victory.
Kilian’s move opens the door
Kilian, 29, has been out since Aug. 10 because of the oblique issue. He made four relief appearances for Philadelphia after arriving in the Aug. 3 trade with Luis Arraez from the Giants.
Across 49 appearances this season, Kilian is 4-7 with a 4.91 ERA in 47.2 innings. He has converted eight of 11 save chances. The Anaheim, California, native was an eighth-round Giants selection in the 2019 MLB Draft out of Texas Tech.
Dave Dombrowski, the Phillies’ president of baseball operations, announced the roster moves as the club brought in Urquidy’s veteran experience and recent bullpen mileage.
