Sam Darnold’s Glute Injury Leaves Seahawks Without Return Timetable

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold has been diagnosed with an unusual soft-tissue injury involving his glute, while the club said his hip joint was not affected. The injury is not expected to become a long-term issue, but Seattle has not set a timetable for his return.

What changed for the franchise

Darnold left Seattle’s Kickoff Game victory over the New England Patriots on Wednesday after an injury initially described as a hip problem. The quarterback had led the Seahawks to a Super Bowl championship in his first season with the franchise.

Seattle resumed practice Monday, but Darnold did not participate in the portion of the session open to the media. Head coach Mike Macdonald is scheduled to address reporters Wednesday.

The team had received encouraging results shortly after Darnold’s exit. Macdonald said last week that the Seahawks got “really, really good news” about their starting quarterback and expected the club to have a clearer recovery plan by Monday. Earlier indications were that Darnold had avoided a major injury, though he could be sidelined for several weeks.

If Darnold cannot play in Seattle’s Week 2 matchup with the Arizona Cardinals, veteran Drew Lock is expected to take over as the starter.

Lock replaced Darnold against New England and completed 16 of 22 passes for 187 yards, throwing one touchdown in the win.
